As professional roofers working across Glasgow and Central Scotland, slate is in our blood. We spend our days restoring, repairing, and installing slate roofs that have weathered Scottish storms for decades. But to truly appreciate the craftsmanship of a Scottish slate roof, you have to visit where it all began.

Recently, Stephen spent a day conducting field and historical research at the iconic Ballachulish Slate Quarry near Glencoe—the birthplace of "the slate that roofed the world."

The History Behind the Stone

Opened in 1760, Ballachulish was once the heart of Scotland's slate industry. At its peak, the quarry produced over 26 million slates per year, supplying homes, tenements, and grand public buildings throughout Glasgow, Edinburgh, and beyond.

Walking through the quarry walls cut into the mountainside, you gain an immense respect for the Victorian quarriers who split these dense, dark blue-grey stones entirely by hand.

Capturing Glencoe’s Slate Heritage in 4K

To document the sheer scale of the quarry and analyze the rock formations up close, we brought our DJI Mini 4 Profor high-resolution aerial mapping. Capturing full 4K imagery and ultra-smooth video footage allowed us to view the historic cliff faces, deep flooded quarry pools, and remaining slate seams from angles rarely seen from the footpaths.

Using advanced drone technology in our day-to-day work isn't just for scenic trips—it’s the exact same technique we use for high-definition aerial roof inspections across Glasgow. Drones allow us to spot hairline slate cracks, damaged lead valleys, and chimney wear safely without needing immediate scaffolding.

Why Scottish Slate Matters Today

Although the Ballachulish quarry closed in 1955, millions of original Ballachulish slates remain on Scottish roofs today. They are renowned for their durability, low water absorption, and distinct dark character. Understanding how these original slates split and age helps us perform precision repairs and slate-matching restorations on traditional properties today.
